When problems have to be solved or decisions made, it is not the case that only one approach or style can be used. The Situational Problem Solving and Decision-Making Inventory suggests that there are four very different styles that can be used flexibly according to the different situations that are encountered.
Using 12 individual problem solving scenarios, individuals are asked to select the most appropriate response or approach from four alternatives offered. This helps to determine the preferences against four styles as follows:
Style 1 - Authoritative
Style 2 - Consultative
Style 3 - Facilitative
Style 4 - Delegative
The assessment also helps individuals to be aware of the four corresponding inappropriate problem solving styles that can be adopted. These are coercing, manipulating, patronising and avoiding. When individuals study their results, they immediately gain an appreciation of their style flexibility and insight into how they might improve their ability to match the most appropriate style to team member readiness levels. |
